Man Who Just Finished Filing His Taxes Prompted To Leave A Tip
SCRANTON – Tax season is already looking different this year what with the addition of non-fungible tokens (more commonly known as NFTs) and Venmo transactions above $600 as taxable income. Terrance Wharton was prepared for that when it came time to file his taxes, but what he wasn’t prepared for was when Intuit TurboTax asked him to leave a tip at the end.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I literally filed my taxes by myself, who am I leaving a tip for, Joe Biden?”
Vijith Thomas, a spokesperson from TurboTax, responded to our questions for comment and explained that “[Mr. Wharton] could leave a tip for their tax experts without technically having to pay for it,” and explained that TurboTax provides the option to deduct the gratuity from an individual’s tax refund rather than from card payment.
This move by TurboTax is part of a growing trend by American businesses to request tips from customers so that they do not have to pay their employees the federal minimum wage. Studies show that this trend has rapidly expanded from bars and restaurants where it originally started and has become more prevalent in other industries, such as equipment rental shops, airport baggage claims, and even among drug dealers.
At press time, Mr. Wharton admitted that he elected to leave a custom tip for the tax experts at TurboTax, and told reporters that, “the tip screen made [him] feel guilty if he didn’t give something.”
