The 2022 World Cup in Qatar: What You Can and Can’t Do

QATAR – As you might have already heard, things are going to be a little different at this year’s FIFA World Cup. Elements that we as fans have gotten used to enjoying during our sporting events are now being restricted by one of the most highly controversial World Cups ever. Here is a list of the things that will not be allowed at the games:

No alcoholic beverages in the stadiums. That’s right, there shall be no consumption of alcohol inside the stadiums during the matches. Unless of course, you have box seats, then you can have all the alcohol that you want. This means that you can be sober during the game, and you can leave your “I’m drunk, call my wife” shirt at home this year.

You have to keep your shirt on, even though it’s hot as hell. Fans will be required to wear the appropriate clothing and will be subject to harsh penalties if they fail to do so. There will be no hefty fans with their shirts off standing next to each other with the letters G O A L painted on their stomachs so if that’s your favorite part of the games, then maybe watch the NFL instead. And ladies, the dress code applies more strictly to women (of course it does) so be prepared to dress as you did back in high school before ‘ELITE’ came out on Netflix.

No kiss cams, don’t even hug. Indecent acts of this sort can be subject to harsh penalties in Qatar, and they are even worse if you are LGBTQ. What you can do is shake a significant other’s hand or give them the ol’ pat on the back. Oh, and if you’re pregnant, you might have to show a marriage certificate that proves that you are married. If you are not married but still find yourself knocked up, find a husband before attending a game.

You can’t say what you want to say. Yep, free speech is limited in Qatar and any speech deemed critical of the government can put you behind bars. You know all that cussing that you like to do before, during, and after the game directed at the rival team? You won’t be able to do that, so practice some words of encouragement.

And that’s the list, don’t do these things and you should be good to go. Have a happy World Cup!
