Hiring Manager Never Intended on Calling This Woman Back
SAN FRANCISCO – Part-time barista Jane Lekovic found renewed hope in her job search when a hiring manager for an advertising firm reached out after reviewing her application and requested a phone interview. After what she considered to be her best interview yet – the conversation flowed and she even made them giggle– Jane was told to expect a call back later in the week. That call never came.
“They sounded so nice over the phone, and we had a really good conversation. I don’t understand why they would say [they would call back] and then never do it?” said Jane, weeks after the interview.
After the first week, Jane said she sent them an email letting them know that she was still very much interested in the position. A few days later and with no response, she decided to call them back herself but said it went straight to voicemail.
Distraught, Jane decided to share her story with us, and our reporters were eventually able to get in touch with the hiring manager. Although they asked to remain anonymous, they provided us with this comment:
“I never intended on calling [Jane] back. I always lie and say that I will just so that the conversation doesn’t end awkwardly – I hate feeling uncomfortable. Besides, she applied for an entry-level job and didn’t have the required 5+ years of experience…”
After Jane’s story was published, she received an outpouring of support from readers on social media, specifically, single men who promised that they would never ghost her like that hiring manager did.
