Texans Find Community In Shared Hatred of Santa Anna, Couldn’t Care Less About Benedict Arnold
SAN ANTONIO — If Santa Anna wasn’t in Hell and were alive today, he would likely be surprised to find out just how many Texans still curse his name. Maybe it’s got something to do with Davy Crockett (played by Billy Bob Thornton ) screaming his ass off while being executed in the movie, The Alamo.
Young Texans for generations have been taught to loathe the long-deceased Mexican President/General for his part in the Texas Revolution, and most especially, for his actions during the Battle of the Alamo.
There’s a reason that every public (and possibly private) student in the state stands to honor the Texas flag before class every day; that reason is the Alamo.
The Battle of the Alamo in 1836, where almost every man who fought to defend the besieged fort was killed, including prominent figures Davy Crockett and William Travis, is quite possibly the most well-known battle in Texas history. It became a battle cry in Texans' struggle for independence from Mexico, and even today, kids still scream “Remember The Alamo!” before they slam a beer.
So, on this anniversary of Texas’ Independence, a sovereign country for 11 years, we Remember The Alamo, curse Santa Anna, and admit that we have forgotten what Benedict Arnold did to make America mad.
